Writing Animal Reports: Lesson Plans for the Early Grades

This 24-page resource guides your instruction so your young writers can successfully research and write a report about an animal. Five detailed lesson plans follow an effective progression. Included is an explanation of how to build your students’ background knowledge prior to researching.


Lesson 1 establishes the purpose of this writing project and teaches students how to research an animal without plagiarizing. An author’s purposes chart and an effective prewriting sheet is included for the research process.

Lesson 4 focuses on guiding students to create an illustration of the animal in its natural habitat.


In Lesson 5, students are explicitly taught how to do an oral presentation of their report. Sample anchor charts are included.
