Phonics & Spelling Resources

Phonics is the ability to determine what letter or letter combination represents each of the 44 phonemes (letter sounds) in our language. There isn’t one recognized phonics program. What research does indicate is that instruction needs to be explicit and systematic. When our instruction is explicit, we provide clear, direct explanations to our students. When our instruction is systematic, we follow a scope and sequence in which skills move from simple to complex. The Phonics Scope & Sequence Chart below explains phonics instruction in more detail.
